The Tarantula Nebula:The Race to Stellar Formation

Posted by Space Station On September - 3 - 2010

Racing is rarely the term that comes to mind when one considers astronomy. However, many events are a race to reach stability before a system flies apart or implodes. The formation of stars from gigantic interstellar clouds is just such a race in which stars struggle to form before the cloud is dispersed. Although a rough estimation of the requirements for collapse are discussed in introductory astrophysics classes (See: Jeans Mass Criterion) this formulation leaves out several elements that come into play in the real universe. Unfortunately for astronomers, these effects can be subtle but significant but untangling them is the subject of a recent paper uploaded to the arXiv preprint server.

Galactic Gravity

Posted by Space Station On August - 29 - 2010

The center of the Milky Way containing Sagittarius A*. The supermassive black hole and several massive young stars in the region create a surrounding haze of superheated gas that shows up in X-ray light. Credit: chandra.harvard.edu and Kyoto University.

Many an alternative theory of gravity has been dreamt up in the bath, while waiting for a bus – or maybe over a light beverage or two. These days it’s possible to debunk (or otherwise) your own pet theory by predicting on paper what should happen to an object that is closely orbiting a black hole – and then test those predictions against observations of S2 and perhaps other stars that are closely orbiting our galaxy’s central supermassive black hole – thought to be situated at the radio source Sagittarius A*.

High-Tech 2WD Ostoure Superbike

Posted by Space Station On August - 10 - 2010

The Ostoure concept is a “super naked” motorcycle concept sprung from the mind of designer Mohammad Reza Shojaie and possibly Skynet. The Ostoure (“Legend” in Persian) boasts two-wheel drive, Bluetooth helmet support, HUD indicators, multiple radiators, and an AC system (?), although that’s all hypothetical given the fact this puppy is a prototype design. The unique controls are akin to an airplane’s, if that helps you visualize how this bike would steer in any way, shape or form,Throw on some side-mounted Gatling guns and this would be right at home on the set of Terminator: Salvation.

UFO Causes Chinese Airport Closure

Posted by Space Station On July - 11 - 2010

A Chinese airport was closed after this mysterious object was spotted in the sky. Arcing over Zhejiang’s provincial capital Hangzhou, the UFO appeared to glow with an eerie white light and left a bright trail in its wake. Xiaoshan Airport was closed after the UFO was detected at around 9 pm and dozens of flights had to be diverted.

I’m not saying there were aliens flying whatever buzzed Hangzhou airspace earlier today. But there’s no question that it was an object, that it was flying, and that it’s as yet unidentified. And yet it looks awfully familiar up close:

Alien spacecraft? Or an intergalactic iPhone 4 in a giant red bumper?

After the UFO was detected at 9pm, dozens of inbound flights to nearby Xiaoshan Airport were diverted. Explanations have so far ranged from “sunlight reflected from planes” to military trials to, but there’s no official statement yet from the Chinese government.

Black Hole Blows a Huge Bubble

Posted by Space Station On July - 8 - 2010

A relatively small black hole is producing tremendously powerful jets while creating a huge bubble of hot gas. Both the jets and the bubble are the largest ever seen, meaning this mini black hole is a powerhouse. But the most unusual feature of this remarkable black hole is not its energy output, but how it is emitting energy.

“The energy output is impressive, but is comparable with the X-ray luminosity of so-called Ultraluminous X-ray sources,” said Manfred Pakull, the lead author of a new paper published today in Nature. “The notion that powerhouses exist that generate most of their energy in the form of jets (kinetic energy) and not as radiation (photons) is rather new.”

Black holes are known to release an incredible amount of energy when they swallow matter, and as Pakull told Universe Today, it was previously thought that most of the energy came out in the form of radiation, predominantly X-rays. But this new gas-blowing black hole, called S26, is showing that some black holes can release at least as much energy, and perhaps much more, in the form of collimated jets of fast moving particles.

“This black hole is just a few solar masses, but is a real miniature version of the most powerful quasars and radio galaxies,” said Pakull, “which contain black holes with masses of a few million times that of the Sun.”

Cyber Future

Cyber Future by Benedict Campbell

Cyber Future by Benedict Campbell.
With Benedict’s creative origins very much grounded in photography, his use of computer generated imagery has been to enhance reality, rather than detract from it. By creating a ‘virtual studio’ on computer, Benedict is able to create sets that he can light, dress and manipulate in the same way that he can do with photography. Unlike photography however, this new media is boundless in its scope , pushing back the frontiers of perception while remaining accessible and reassuringly ‘organic’.”

Vast Oceans Likely Covered One Third of Mars

Posted by Space Station On June - 14 - 2010

n illustration of what Mars might have looked like some 3.5 billion years ago when an ocean likely covered one-third of the planet’s surface, according to a new University of Colorado at Boulder study. (Illustration by University of Colorado)

Like rising waters from a flood, the evidence for past water on Mars — and large amounts of it – keep mounting. The latest study, which combined the analysis of water-related features including scores of delta deposits and thousands of river valleys with a look at the possibility of a global hydrosphere on early Mars, found that a vast ocean likely covered one-third of the surface of Mars some 3.5 billion years ago.”Collectively, these results support the existing theories regarding the extent and formation time of an ancient ocean on Mars,” said Gaetano Di Achille and Brian Hynek from the Univesity of Colorado at Boulder, in their article in Nature Geoscience, “and imply the surface conditions during the time probably allowed the occurrence of a global and active hydrosphere integrating valley networks, deltas and a vast ocean as major components of an Earth-like hydrologic cycle.”
