The Empire Strikes Apps: The Battle for Hoth

Posted by Space Station On July - 14 - 2010

This year marks the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, one of the movies that changed my life as a young boy growing up with dreams of going to space. A few months ago I got a email from Tomas Rawlings over@ FluffyLogic asking me if i wanted to take part in helping get the word out about a new game he was working on. Tom somehow got beamed up to the Space Station & liked what he saw and thought this is the perfect place to help launch his companys new game. when I found it was a Star Wars game I told Tom hell yes im in!! It drops tomorrow for the  iphone & ipod touch

Working feverishly away for the last few months in a small studio in Bristol, England – games developer FluffyLogic has been bringing to life a digital recreation of the classic battle for Hoth from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.  “Back in December 2009 they were contacted out of the blue by a representative of THQ about what they’d  do with the Star Wars universe to play in, ” says the games producer Ana Kronschnabl, “It took about 5 seconds to pick our favourite scene from the pantheon of the films. We all grew up with Episodes to IV to VI, so doing the battle of Hoth was always top of our list.”

The developer has been working closely with THQ and Lusas Arts to create a strategy game in the Tower Defense genre of game, titled, Star Wars: The Battle for Hoth.  “This game focuses on one of sci-fi’s most epic battles,” says the games designer Tomas Rawlings, “it is epic because it has got it all – conflict, heroism, a back-against-the war struggle, cool military technology, good vs evil and of course AT-ATs.”  The game give the player 15 levels in 2 gameplay modes all set around the famous battle on the ice planet.  The game features all of the classic units that fans of the film will immediately recognise; AT-ATs, Snowspeeders, Snowtroopers and the trenches and guns of the Rebel defences.

Star Wars: The Battle for Hoth is a game for both iPhone and iPod.  It is a tower defense strategy game; such games have the player placing defensive units to stop waves of enemy units from exiting the level.  The game sees the player taking the role of commander of the Rebel forces trying to stop Imperial forces from reaching the main shield generators before the evacuation of Hoth is complete.  As the game progresses new units for both the Rebel forces and the Imperial attackers are introduced.  The game has 2 difficulty settings – easy and normal, plus comes with a help and unit guide.

The title also manages to coincide with the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back.  May 21st 1980 saw the original release. The film was one of the highest grossing films of 1980 and has grown in reputation over the years to become of the the most loved of all the Star Wars pantheon. “When we were asked to do a game based in the Star Wars universe, we felt really honoured – that this was a great opportunity and that we had to handle the ideas with care,” says producer at FluffyLogic, Ana Kronschnabl, “The 30th anniversary was important to us – it felt like this would

be our tribute to a film that we’ve grown up with.” “In another 30 years I think we’ll still be celebrating The Empire Strikes Back.” says Tomas, “Yes the platform will again be different; it might be a super-virtual reality version of the game where we actually  feel the cold of Hoth and involuntarily duck as Snowspeeders scream overhead – the the story of the film is a universal one that has become so engrained in our culture that it will endure as long as we do.”

Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions

Posted by Space Station On July - 7 - 2010

As many predicted, Spider-Man 2099 has been revealed as one of the playable versions of Spider-Man in the upcoming Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions video game (for Wii, DS, XBOX 360, PS3). The game will allow players to take control of 4 versions of Spider-Man (Spider-Man Noir, 2099, regular, and the unrevealed 4th version) in a storyline that switches between realities.

The New Smaller Xbox 360 Doesn't Have to Be Black

Colorware, the gadget-colorizers who most recently started painting Segways, had enough paint left over to coat your new Xbox 360 S as well.

Buying an entirely new Xbox 360 in your own designed colors will be $500 (it’s normally $300), but if you mail in your already-purchased Xbox, it’s just $175.

So if you want your Xbox 360 to be like the old Xbox 360 (a bit less “modern” than Microsoft says they’re trying to do with the new one), here ya go. Then you can run it over with your new Segway.

Holy shit this is the best thing to hit the market!! If you love gaming like I do then the retron 3 is for you

http://www.ohgizmo.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/retron3.jpg

It’s basically an NES, an SNES and a Sega Genesis mashed up into a single, space-saving console. It doesn’t play ROMS or anything like that, so you’ll still need to hold onto your old game carts, and if you don’t like playing with the 2 included wireless controllers, you can plug in the controllers from your original consoles since it includes 2 ports for each of them. It’s also got composite and S-video AV hookups, and is available in your choice of red or black for just $69.99.

Based on the MT Framework engine, Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds “uses a simplified, three-button control scheme of undefined low, medium, and high attacks modeled after Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars, which Capcom believes will ‘knock down the wall of complicated controls and open up the field of strategic fighting to all comers’”.

The next-gen PSP

Posted by Space Station On May - 18 - 2010

Next PSP Could Have Touchscreen, Dual Cameras and a "F**king Powerful" Processor

Nuts. That’s the most concise way to describe the alleged specs of the next-gen PSP, according to VG247. Nuts! But sadly, these nuts may not show up in time for E3—or even 2010.

VG247’s report comes from “multiple sources” which appear to be in game publishing, where a whole bunch of firms have apparently signed NDAs to start work on games for the new platform. The spec sheet reads like this:

• Dual cameras
• No physical media, probably
• It’ll have a touchscreen, but it will have a similar physical button layout, too
• 3G! No, seriously, it might have 3G. Phones are becoming more like gaming handhelds, so gaming handhelds are going to become more like phones, I guess? Makes sense.
• A “fucking powerful” four-core Cell processor, like a miniature PS3 processor

Despite the impressive number of claims made here, there aren’t that many specifics—perhaps tellingly, the one true spec, the four-core Cell processor, is the least believable of the lot. Handhelds are expected to have touchscreens now, a precedent has been set for a la carte 3G coverage, and physical media is obviously on the wane, so if the PSP2 didn’t fulfill at least half of these predictions then it’ll be DOA.

LG 3DTVs and Xbox 360s Sold Together 3D Gaming

Posted by Space Station On May - 12 - 2010

LG 3DTVs and Xbox 360s Sold Together In South Korea For 3D GamingThanks to LG’s Flickr, we now know that 3D gaming on the Xbox 360 is possible—with LG 3DTVs, at least. The details are sketchy due to the translation, but it appears they’ll be sold together in South Korea.

The Flickr account, after translation, says that LG and Microsoft Korea have entered a “strategic partnership” to bundle the Xbox 360 and LG’s LX9500 (which will come in 47 and 55-inch sizes when it goes on sale this May/June) 3DTV model together. In South Korea, more than 1,000 stores will apparently launch 3D gaming areas showing LG 3DTVs and Xbox 360 gaming, with the initiative being rolled out to Asia Pacific regions. No word on whether the western world will see any love from LG and Xbox 360, sadly.
