BREEZY EXCURSION

Solar Dynamics Observatory,

Posted by Space Station On January - 31 - 2010

The “Crown Jewel” of NASA’s solar science research fleet, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, was transported from the Astrotech payload processing facility outside KSC to the Vertical Integration Facility (VIF) at Launch Complex 41 in the overnight hours of Jan 26. It’s standard operating procedure to transport such highly valuable payloads after midnight, when the least amount of traffic is on the road in order to minimize any possibility for an accident. The $848 million spacecraft was moved at about 10 MPH on a specially designed flat bed truck for a trip lasting roughly four hours.

ALIEN TECH: YESSSSS

Hand-Mounted Mouse or Goa’uld Weapon? Maybe I’ve been watching too many Stargate reruns or maybe the AirMouse hand-mounted input device was really inspired by Goa’uld technology. Either way, I’m skeptical about its ability to prevent repetitive stress injuries. The wireless device is made of a “lightweight durable fabric that seamlessly aligns itself with the ligaments of your hand and wrist” and will supposedly go for a full week without charging. If you want one though—be it for computing or for some evil deeds—you’ll have to wait six to twelve months and spend about $130. [AirMouse via Gizmag via Make]

192 Laser Beams Combined to Form One Megajoule Laser

Posted by Space Station On January - 29 - 2010

The folks at the national Ignition Facility decided to demonstrate fusion by focusing the energy of 192 super powerful lasers onto a tiny target. They certainly proved their concept by producing a one megajoule laser shot. Yeah, that’s pretty powerful.

This demonstration is being proclaimed as a “key step towards nuclear fusion” by the National Nuclear Security Administration. After all, this is apparently the first time such a level of laser energy was reached. More experiments will occur in the summer of this year,

Moon and Mars Put on a Show Friday Night

If your skies are clear on Friday night, January 29, 2010, take advantage of one of the skywatching highlights of the year. A full Moon and Mars will be putting on a show, and the pair will be prominently close to each other in the sky. Plus, this Friday night’s full Moon is the biggest and brightest full Moon of the year. It’s a “perigee Moon,” as much as 14% wider and 30% brighter than other full Moons you’ll see later in 2010, according to Spaceweather.com. And, even though you’ve likely not gotten an email from an excited acquaintance relaying that Mars is really close to the Earth now — that is the case. Mars is at opposition on the 29th, which means it lines up opposite the Sun and is now the closest to Earth their orbits, and so will shine brighter.
