This is another taste of whats to come this season from booger

For an Earth-like planet to harbor life, or multicellular life, certainly temperature is important, but what else is important? And what makes the temperature of an exo-Earth “just right”? Some recent studies have concluded that answering these questions can be surprisingly difficult, and that some of the answers are surprisingly curious.
In the “Rare Earth” hypothesis, this is a Goldilocks criterion; unless the tilt is kept stable (by a moon like our Moon), and at a “just right” angle, the climates will swing too wildly for multicellular life to form: too many snowball Earths (the whole globe covered in snow and ice), or too much risk of a runaway greenhouse. “We find that planets with small ocean fractions or polar continents can experience very severe seasonal climatic variations,” Columbia University’s David Spiegel writes*, summing up the results of an extensive series of models investigating the effects of obliquity, land/ocean coverage, and rotation on Earth-like planets, “but that these planets also might maintain seasonally and regionally habitable conditions over a larger range of orbital radii than more Earth-like planets.”
WE WILL BE THERE TONIGHT GETTING SOME GOOD FLIX..

Two objects reportedly crashed to the ground near Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia on Feb. 19, 2010. The first object, according to the report on the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness database, weighed 10 kg, while the second larger object weighed approximately 2 tons. Other than that, there’s not a lot of information available about the objects. But of course, UFOers are having a field day, calling the image, above, that accompanied the report a “leaked UFO crash” picture. But the object looks suspiciously like a rocket or jet engine, or perhaps a rocket nose cone. Objects that crash to Earth likely have a very terrestrial origin. We’ll provide an update when any news becomes available. But if you are looking for a few laughs, check out the comments on Io9.

Teaming up yet again, Medicom Toy introduces its latest toy project alongside the iconic Star Wars franchise. This latest Kubrick release is featured in a larger 400% format, taking the popular C-3PO character and immortalizing him in Kubrick form. The figure looks to release in August of this year at select Medicom Toy accounts.

Breezy Excursion is proud to present the: 2nd Annual Inner Richmond Pubcrawl which will be tomorrow, Saturday, February 20, in the Inner Richmond District in SF beginning at 8pm. Last year was a huge success; the premise is simple: 10 bars, 30 minutes per bar, and a drink per bar (if you’re up for the Capo challenge). Come out to this not-so-known area of SF, share some drinks and laughs as we crawl through most of the bars in the Inner Richmond. Blackouts are inevitable and encouraged. It’s gonna be an event you don’t wanna miss. Peep the website: pubcrawl-sf.com for further info. See you there fam. Gyea.

We’re being invaded! About one-fourth of the star clusters in our galaxy are actually invaders from other galaxies, according to a new paper. Research from a team of scientists from Swinburne University of Technology in Australia shows that that many of our galaxy’s globular star clusters are actually foreigners – having been born elsewhere and then migrated to our Milky Way. “It turns out that many of the stars and globular star clusters we see when we look into the night sky are not natives, but aliens from other galaxies,” said Duncan Forbes. “They have made their way into our galaxy over the last few billion years.”

THE SEVENTH LETTER + KNOWN GALLERY teamed up to give you one of the coolest things at S.L.A.T.E.
Galaxy density in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field, with colors representing the redshift of the galaxies, ranging from redshift of 0.2 (blue) to 1 (red). Pink x-ray contours show the extended x-ray emission as observed by XMM-Newton.
Dark matter (actually cold, dark – non-baryonic – matter) can be detected only by its gravitational influence. In clusters and groups of galaxies, that influence shows up as weak gravitational lensing, which is difficult to nail down. One way to much more accurately estimate the degree of gravitational lensing – and so the distribution of dark matter – is to use the x-ray emission from the hot intra-cluster plasma to locate the center of mass.
And that’s just what a team of astronomers have recently done … and they have, for the first time, given us a handle on how dark matter has evolved over the last many billion years.
