Earliest Black Holes

Posted by Space Station On March - 28 - 2010

The Spitzer Space Telescope has found what appear to be two of the earliest and most primitive supermassive black holes known. “We have found what are likely first-generation quasars, born in a dust-free medium and at the earliest stages of evolution,” Spitzer has identified two — the smallest on record — about 13 billion light-years away from Earth. The quasars, called J0005-0006 and J0303-0019, were first unveiled in visible light using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. That discovery team, which included Jiang, was led by Xiaohui Fan, a coauthor of the recent paper. NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory had also observed X-rays from one of the objects. X-rays, ultraviolet and optical light stream out from quasars as the gas surrounding them is swallowed.

Nota

We loved Nota, a piano learning app, on our iPhones. But we love the iPad version far more. Just look at how much better the iPad app looks when put right next to its iPhone counterpart:

Following up on the recent launch of the Mr. Bathing Ape collection involving A Bathing Ape and United Arrows, here’s another perspective into the line. As mentioned, the line takes on a more conservative and refined approach. And while Bape’s offerings over the years have never been on the lower side of the price spectrum, the collection is priced rather respectably. Available now at United Arrows.

First Flight of Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo

Posted by Space Station On March - 25 - 2010

Virgin Galactic, the private aerospace company founded by billionaire Richard Branson, successfully tested the passenger space-plane SpaceShipTwo today. SpaceShipTwo (SS2), is also called the Virgin Space Ship Enterprise, or VSS Enterprise, an obvious tribute to another space vehicle of some note. SS2 was carried to 45,000 feet (13.7km) by its mothership, named WhiteKnightTwo (WK2), or ‘Eve’, after Branson’s mother. In this initial ‘captive carry’ test of the space plane, it remained attached to the mothership for the duration of the flight.

“Growth Spurts”

Posted by Space Station On March - 24 - 2010

Looking back in time – and through a gravitational lens – astronomers found evidence that galaxies in the early Universe went through a “growth spurt” of rapid and vigorous star formation. A distant galaxy, known as SMM J2135-0102 is making new stars 250 times faster than the Milky Way. Due to the amount of time it takes light to reach Earth the scientists observed the galaxy as it would have appeared 10 billion years ago – just three billion years after the Big Bang.

“This galaxy is like a teenager going through a growth spurt,” said Dr. Mark Swinbank from Durham University, lead author of a new paper published in Nature. “We don’t fully understand why the stars are forming so rapidly but our results suggest that stars formed much more efficiently in the early Universe than they do today. Galaxies in the early Universe appear to have gone through rapid growth and stars like our sun formed much more quickly than they do today.”

Turnbull & Asser are widely regarded as the worlds leading shirtmakers. Established in 1885, they have been operating from around Jermyn Street since 1903 to the present day. In a collaboration with Billionaire Boys Club, both brands pay tribute to one of the great style icons of the 20th Century, Gianni Agnelli, Itallian industrialist and head of Fiat. He was especially famous for wearing his wristwatch over his shirt sleeve, and on occasion his suit. The shirt is made with classic Thomas Mason cloth, in a classic Blue & white stripe, with the Billionaire Boys Club Jet logo on the breast, and a Pop art style wristwatch printed on the left sleeve. The Billionaire Boys Club x Turnbull & Asser shirt will be released exclusively online in Europe through Billionaire Boys Club on March 24th and shortly afterwards through the following stockists: Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, John Antony, Wellgosh, Storm, Dee Cee Style and colette.
